My Working Collection will contain the photos that were just imported. This Collection along with some Smart Collections will assist me the culling the photos from the photo shoot just imported into Lightroom Classic.

How to Get Photos Into the Working Collection

Since the Working Collection is a standard (or if you will Dumb) collection, in the Library module, press Ctrl + A  to select all of the photos. Then click on the picture portion of one of these photos, hold down the mouse button and drag to the Working Collection in the Collections panel at the left of the screen.

Once these photos are in the Working Collection, press the Ctrl + D to deselect the photos.

Note:

With this Working Collection approach and the associated Smart Collections, I can start with this step with any set of photos I want to work on.
For instance, if I want to go through this culling process for photos taken on multiple shoots (because I feel I have more photos than I need to keep), I simply click on the Location or Subject Keyword that defines that group of photos I wish to further cull.
This can also be helpful if I get pressed for time and don't complete my work on a group of shots on a particular date. In that case, in the Folders panel in Lightroom Classic on the left, I click on the folder for that date and start culling, etc.
